Bio & background

Alyssa McClelland is an Australian writer-director recognized for blending dark comedy with emotional depth across television, short films, and commercials. She directed all six episodes of BBC's Amandaland Season 1 (2025), which won the BAFTA Award for Best Scripted Comedy and was renewed for two additional seasons. McClelland also helmed three finale episodes of Netflix's Emmy-winning Sex Education (Season 4, 2023) and served as set-up director on Netflix's Everything Now (2023), establishing its vibrant visual language while collaborating with on-set consultants for sensitive representation of eating disorders. Her short film Second Best (2018), which she wrote, directed, and produced, won the Australian Directors Guild Award for Best Direction in a Short Film, the Dendy Live Action Short Award at Sydney Film Festival, and honors at Milan, Flickerfest, and international festivals. Before directing, McClelland accumulated over 30 acting credits and trained in Practical Aesthetics at the Atlantic Theater Company in New York. Her commercial work for Apple, Google, Samsung, McDonald's, Air New Zealand, Netflix, Vodafone, and AEG has earned a D&AD Black Pencil and London International Awards Best Direction. Currently, she is set-up director and executive producer on Netflix's adaptation of My Brilliant Career (2026) and co-director/executive producer on the See-Saw Films miniseries The Great White starring Hugo Weaving. McClelland is working with FINCH (Australia/New Zealand), Anonymous Content (US commercials), and Independent Talent (international film/TV).
