Bio & background

Aneil Karia is an Academy Award-winning British director working with Somesuch in the US and UK. He won the 2022 Oscar for Best Live Action Short for "The Long Goodbye" with Riz Ahmed, which also earned a Cannes Lions Gold for Direction, Grand Prix at HollyShorts and Odense, and the British Independent Film Award for Best Short. His debut feature "Surge" premiered at Sundance 2020, where lead Ben Whishaw won the World Cinema Best Actor Jury Prize. Karia directed the final three episodes of Netflix's "Top Boy" and helmed Kano's "Trouble," winner of Best Special Video Project at the UK Music Video Awards. In 2025 he premiered "Hamlet" with Ahmed at Telluride and directed Apple's "Big Man" starring Stormzy, shot entirely on iPhone 16 Pro, which won a Silver Medal at the One Point Four Awards. His commercial clients include Nike, American Express, Nintendo, and Stella McCartney. A National Film and Television School graduate, Karia works in a semi-improvisational, observational style informed by British television drama and music video aesthetics, with recurring collaborations including cinematographer Stuart Bentley.
