Ayappa KM is a Mumbai-based director, writer, and co-founder of Early Man Film, recognized as one of India's most influential commercial filmmakers. Starting as a copywriter at Orchard Advertising before transitioning to MTV, he developed a signature offbeat comedic style that blends sharp satire with visually arresting compositions. Over nearly two decades, Ayappa has directed campaigns for Apple, CRED, Cadbury, Flipkart, Ambuja Cement, Havells, Tata Docomo, and Paytm, among many others. His CRED campaigns—including the cultural phenomenon 'Indiranagar Ka Gunda' starring Rahul Dravid—exemplify his gift for celebrity subversion and meta-commentary. He has won multiple Cannes Lions, D&AD, Spikes Asia, and AdFest awards. Known for unconventional casting that reflects India's actual diversity rather than advertising stereotypes, Ayappa populates frames with real human texture. His visual style is maximalist yet disciplined: tightly composed, symmetrical frames bursting with bold colors, layered set design, and choreographed movement. He balances scale and intimacy effortlessly, whether shooting in ornate palaces for Apple India or constructing absurdist worlds for fintech startups. Beyond commercials, Ayappa directs long-form work including the short film Runners and episodes of Amazon's Unpaused series. In July 2025, he signed with Stink Films for global representation across Europe and the Americas while continuing with Early Man Film in India.
