Caroline Koning is a self-taught Dutch director working with Park Pictures and Divine, known for culturally grounded narratives that prioritize research and emotional specificity. A former fashion student turned filmmaker, she has directed campaigns for Nike (including the D&AD Wood Pencil-winning "New Girl" for Japan), Mercedes-Benz, Loewe, Wrangler, Etsy, and Intermarché. Named Shots Director of the Year in 2021, Koning has also earned recognition at D&AD, ADCN, Cannes Lions, Ciclope, and the Clio and Webby Awards. Her process begins with deep cultural research—studying Japan's gender equality rankings for Nike Japan, consulting Saudi artists for an unrealized Nike Saudi brief—and she watches cinema from the cultures she films rather than advertising. She writes characters before scripts, developing backstories and micro-details that inform casting and performance. Her work spans luxury fashion collaborations (i-D x Loewe), automotive launches (Mercedes-Benz "Welcome Home" with Kimi Antonelli), and community-driven sports content (Diadora x Lack of Guidance). She directed Nike Japan's multilingual shoot entirely remotely during COVID, demonstrating adaptability under constraints. Trained in ballet at the Royal Academy of Dance and self-taught in editing, Koning brings agency creative experience to her directing work. She advocates for reducing industry travel, served as Dutch ambassador for Free the Work (2018-2022), and continues mentoring emerging filmmakers.
