Bio & background

Chris Buck is a Canadian-born, New York–based photographer and commercial director working with Sparks Productions and listed for motion with Redeye. He relocated from Toronto to New York in 1990 and built his reputation as a commercial and editorial portraitist before expanding into spots. His still work has landed in the American Photography annual more than forty times; he was the first recipient of the Arnold Newman Portrait Prize (2007) and has published three monographs, including Uneasy: Portraits 1986–2016 and Presence: The Invisible Portrait. Documented advertiser relationships include Diesel, Google, Xerox, Old Spice, Dodge, IBM, Oscar Mayer, and Exiger. Sparks reel titles include Oscar Mayer’s “Eat Like A Grown Up” and Exiger’s “Save the Day.” Roster and trade copy frame his voice as conceptual, irreverent, smart, and intimate—oddness grounded in reality, subtle humor, available-light scramble when required, locked-off multi-pass setups, and resistance to over-produced retouching. Agencies cast him for weird, playful, awkward ideas executed with a natural hand. He is not the Disney animated-feature director of the same name.
