Bio & background

Clayton Vila is a Los Angeles-based writer-director and former professional freeskier, represented in the US by Greenpoint Pictures (signed September 2020) and in Canada by Dreamboat. Raised on Block Island, Rhode Island, he turned pro as a teenager, earned X Games bronze, and starred in major ski films before directing the ski movies he appeared in and expanding into documentary, narrative shorts, and branded work. His breakthrough is the 2018 ESPN/Red Bull Media House feature documentary Back to Life: The Torin Yater-Wallace Story, which premiered at the Rhode Island International Film Festival and won a Gold Telly for Best Sports Documentary. Commercial credits include Monster Energy’s Finding Monsters (2021), intercutting childhood portraits with athletes Lizzie Armanto, Taka Higashino, and Vila; REI’s Cowboy (Vimeo Staff Pick; Mountainfilm premiere); anthem campaigns for Sierra Nevada and Skullcandy; a 16mm fashion film for Knox Swim; work for Filson, BRUTE, and ACS; and Reebok’s Through the Fire Director’s Cut (November 2024). He writes and directs shorts including Nerve (2021), The Maze (2022/2023), and Falling into Place (2024), appears in SHOOT’s 2022 New Directors Showcase, and runs post outfit frankpost.tv. Trade coverage positions his work at the intersection of narrative and documentary forms that celebrate classic cinema, with an action-seeking, emotionally direct voice shaped by athlete experience.
