Bio & background

Davis Guggenheim is an Academy Award-winning director and producer whose work spans documentary features, prestige television, political filmmaking, and selective commercials. He won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature for An Inconvenient Truth (2006) and a Peabody Award for The First Year (2001). Subsequent films include It Might Get Loud (2009), Waiting for Superman (2010 Sundance Audience Award), He Named Me Malala (Critics’ Choice Best Documentary), and Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie (2023, Apple TV+), which received multiple Emmy nominations including for outstanding directing. Early television credits include producing and directing on HBO’s Deadwood and episodes of NYPD Blue, ER, 24, Alias, and The Shield. In 2008 he directed Barack Obama’s DNC short A Mother’s Promise and a primetime campaign infomercial. Commercially he has been working with Bob Industries in the US, with a reel that includes an OpenAI piece (Sam & Jony). In 2020 he co-founded Concordia Studio, where he serves as chief creative officer. On Still he used an intimate 40mm single-shot closeup interview setup adapted from a commercial shoot and pursued a cinematic approach with big music and color over conventional talking-head form.
