Dropbear (Jonathan “Jono” Chong) is an Australian director-animator working with Photoplay/Playtime and founder of Melbourne’s Dropbear Digital studio. From a craftism background of homemade and found objects, stop-motion, miniatures, and in-camera techniques, he fuses art-directed practical work with live action, 3D, and motion design, remaining hands-on as a stop-motion animator on set. His commercials include Greenpeace’s May 2024 Fight For Our Forests—77 three-D-printed replacement models, hand-crafted sets, haze, and probe-lens cinematography—plus Blue Shark and other Greenpeace films; Made by Dyslexia’s Square Pegs with Jeremy Irons voiceover for DDB Melbourne; Qantas Health Insurance miniature stop-motion; Treasury’s marble-run tax film for BMF on a seven-axis motion-control robot; SunRun’s hand-animated solar spot for Cutwater; and food and product work for Abbott’s Village Bakery Thins, Dare Veggie Crisps, Zantac, Blackmores Superkids, Lipton, British Paints, Ikea, Big W, St. George Bank, Westpac, Instacart, and Australian Marine Conservation Society. Signatures include probe-lens miniature cinematography, motion-control robot moves, three-D-printed replacement animation, hand-painted models, bold colour, and graphic pared-back composition.
