Bio & background

Greg Barnes (also credited as Greg Van Barnes) is a UK-based director signed to RSA’s Black Dog Films in October 2018. Trade coverage frames him as a filmmaker with documentary foundations who works across music video, narrative-led shorts, and branded content. His highest-profile recent credit is the March 2024 black-and-white Kiasmos video ‘Flown,’ a coastal end-of-life narrative shot by DoP Matthew Wilson with hazy chiaroscuro lighting and sweeping beach imagery. Black Dog–hosted branded titles include Cornish Orchard’s ‘Tasting Tasting,’ Marantz work with Max Richter, and the MTV x Adidas Originals series; his personal site also names Adidas and Red Bull as brand clients. Music and performance credits include a one-take EELS video starring Jon Hamm, plus projects for Barry Can’t Swim, Black Country, New Road, Catching Flies, FKJ, Young Fathers, Bonobo, Kamaal Williams, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Air’s Nicolas Godin, and Poppy Ajudha. Earlier work includes a Patten live film mixing digital, video-tap and 16mm, and the lockdown short ‘100 ft of Distance,’ shot on leftover 16mm and soundtracked by Daniel Avery. Craft signals center on analogue texture, hybrid film/digital capture, documentary observation, and considered lighting. Commercial TVC volume is more limited than his music and short-form slate; no major advertising awards are evidenced.
