Bio & background

James Lawes is a commercials director working across the UK and North America, trained at the New York Film Academy. He broke in after a Malawi HIV charity behind-the-scenes assignment was adopted as the client’s lead film, leading to further Africa work and a sustained public-interest practice. Trade coverage cites clever camera transitions, motion-control set pieces, and practical in-camera trickery finished with restrained VFX. Signature spots include Public Health England’s Better Health, with transitions through a fridge, sofa, and crisp packet; Chevrolet’s RS Moments, a seemingly single-shot sequence using drones, Russian arms, motion control, and steadicam (including a four-second passage that took sixteen hours); Meningitis Now’s The Fastest Hour; and a Dupixent spot that aired during Super Bowl LVII. Additional clients include Old El Paso (Game Night/Homegating), Best Buy Tech Together, Age UK, Stop Ivory’s Going, Going, Gone (JWT/Snapper, VFX The Mill, 2018), BUPA, Scottish Government Free Yourself, MS Society, Strepsils, and True Potential. Awards coverage credits 30–45+ international honors at Cannes, EvCom, New York Festivals, The Drum Roses, and WorldFest Houston, including multiple Best Charity Film wins. His 2019 short Be Good won Best Director at the British Horror Film Festival. Representation includes Great Guns (UK, Amsterdam, Middle East, Asia), Splendors (US), and Alfredo Films (Canada).
