Julia Kupiec is a Brooklyn- and Los Angeles-based writer-director represented for U.S. commercials by Thinking Machine since July 2024. An NYU Tisch alumna in film production and philosophy, she built her craft as a cinematographer and editor before moving into writing and directing. After her documentary short Andi—a portrait of a Long Beach roller skater—was shortlisted at the 2022 Cannes Young Director Award, GSD&M hired her to direct the U.S. Air Force Women’s History Month spot “Airman” (Yacht Club Films), which contrasts contemporary women Airmen at work with archival audio opposing women’s military service. Commercial credits also include UMass Boston’s “For The Times” (Joan Creative/Vagrants), By Liv Handmade’s observational “Liv: In Process” (co-directed with Nina Gofur for rubbertape), and Diet Coke and Young GYN work on her Thinking Machine reel. She cites Method acting study with Tony Greco as a major influence on performance direction. Recognition includes Cannes YDA Gold in the Dream Pitch category for the screenplay Growing Pains, a 2024 Berlin Commercial New Generation Award shared with Nina Gofur, multiple Berlin Commercial nominations for Andi, and the 2025 BlueCat Short Film Script win for Chicken Skin. She is developing a debut feature while continuing narrative and commercial work.
