Kate McMullen is a UK commercial and short-film director represented in the US by Sanctuary and in the UK by Bold. Trained in history at Oxford, she worked agency-side as a copywriter at JWT Paris and Creative Director at TBWA Shanghai before moving fully into directing. Her breakthrough short Nail House (2016), a low-budget docu-fiction about Shanghai neighbourhood demolitions, set a pattern of finding overlooked subjects and threading wit through serious themes. Later shorts include Welcome to Malta (2020) for the Women’s Rights Foundation, The Real St George (2021) shot on 16mm with DP Ahmet Husseyin, and Little Berlin (2021), narrated by Christoph Waltz, BAFTA-shortlisted and Silver Screen winner at the 2023 Young Director Award. Commercially she has directed Tesco Food Love Stories: Wild Swim, Bupa’s This Is Health, Zurich Insurance spots with 72andSunny Amsterdam, Allianz Alphabet/ABC, Interbev’s Naturally Flexitarian with Ogilvy Paris, Intermarché, and L’Agence Bio. Coverage highlights real-people casts on Bupa and Tesco, a documentarian table-energy approach on the French flexitarian meat spot, and lean, flab-free narrative shaped by advertising’s need to earn an audience in thirty seconds. She remains active across insurance, health, grocery/retail, and cause-led briefs.
