Matthew Swanson is a Canadian commercial director known for blending sharp comedy with cinematic craft and grounded character work. He trained at Concordia University's Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema in Montreal before gaining international attention with his Japanese-language short film "Hiro" (2005), which won Best Short Film at SXSW and earned a Genie Award nomination. In commercials, his Spotify "Let the Song Play" campaign set to Sia's "Elastic Heart" became a defining piece, winning a Silver Lion and Bronze Lion at Cannes Lions (2020/2021), Gold for Commercial of the Year at the inaugural Shots Awards Americas (2020), an AICP Award, and Silver for Best Direction at Ciclope Berlin (2019). His work for clients including Spotify, McDonald's, Wealthsimple, Bosch, Tesco, Coinbase, HBO, Zillow, and WestJet has earned recognition at D&AD, The One Show, British Arrows, CLIO Awards, and the Shark Awards. Swanson's comedic approach favors unexpected, insightful humor over easy punchlines, with what he calls "specificity" extending through casting, art direction, and lensing. He continues to work internationally and mentors emerging directors to help diversify the commercial talent pool.
