Michael Downing is a Los Angeles-based commercial director with over 20 years of experience specializing in performance-driven comedy and observational storytelling. Originally from Toronto, Downing broke through with Bud Light's "Skydiver" Super Bowl spot in 2005, which claimed the #1 position in USA Today's AdMeter and won the USC Cocky Award for Best Super Bowl Ad. His Samsung "Next Big Thing" campaign featuring Tim Burton generated millions of views through ad-libbed performances. Downing directed Netflix's "Pep Talk" spot that won a Cannes Lion for its meta-comedic approach, and helmed Kraft Canada's Diamond Shreddies integrated campaign that won a Grand Clio and sold out limited-edition boxes in two months. His work spans major brands including KFC, Subway, Snickers, Little Caesars, Princess Cruises, Visa, Coca-Cola, Honda, Capital One, ESPN, Whole Foods, and HBO. Most recently, he directed MassMutual's 2026 "Dynamic Duos" NHL campaign for the Stanley Cup Playoffs and a Wells Fargo Super Bowl spot. Trained in fine art and theater before attending Ryerson Film School and AFI, where his thesis film "Fine" won a Student Academy Award, Downing brings painterly visual sensibility to naturalistic comedy. He is working with Sweetshop globally and Partners Film in Canada.
