Bio & background

Ryland Walker Knight is a Los Angeles-based writer, director, and editor, and a partner at Oakland production company Capsaicinco. A former film critic whose writing appeared in MUBI’s Notebook, Reverse Shot, n+1, and Slant, he has worked as a filmmaker since the early 2010s across narrative shorts, producing, and commercial and editorial post. His directed shorts include Inside Voices (2014; Vancouver Film Festival, SF Indiefest), Ghost Comb (2017), I Wish You Would (2020), Mann’s Sparks (2025), and The Bad Samaritan (2025). Inside Voices, covered by MUBI Notebook, follows two San Francisco girls in a talk-driven domestic episode; Knight has described directing as talking with people and conveying ideas with few words. On the advertising side, he wrote, directed, and edited Walden Pond Books (2021–2022), a Capsaicinco-produced bookstore ad that earned a Vimeo Staff Pick in February 2022. ProductionHUB lists brand relationships including Phaidon Press (commercial editor, COI: Stories and Recipes), Google/YouTube (additional editor, State of Pride), MTV, Salesforce, and Hamilton Zanze & Co. He was a 2024 Sundance Institute Native Lab Fellow developing the feature THE LIP OF THE WORLD, joined NYU Tisch’s 2025 Empowering Indigenous Voices directing workshop, and is a 2026 Rideback Rise Circle Fellow. He is represented through Capsaicinco in the U.S.
