Shy Kids is a Toronto-based directing collective and indie pop band comprising Walter Woodman, Patrick Cederberg, and Matthew Hornick—Ryerson University film studies alumni who broke through with their 2013 short film Noah, winner of Best Canadian Short Film at TIFF and a Canadian Screen Award. Dubbed "punk rock Pixar," the trio seamlessly blends animation, VFX, and live-action to create emotionally resonant narratives powered by cutting-edge technology. They pioneered AI-assisted filmmaking as the first artists to release a short film using OpenAI's Sora platform—Air Head, a viral 2024 project—and Walter Woodman has spoken on AI in film and TV at CES panels. In the commercial space, Shy Kids joined Hungry Man (global) and Steam (Canada) in December 2024, bringing expertise in animation techniques from candy stop-motion to sophisticated 2D and screen-based UI work. Their branded portfolio includes the National Down Syndrome Society's "Town 21" campaign and Girls Who Code's "Missing Code" spot, which earned Bronze at the shots Awards and Clio Awards and was shortlisted at Cannes Lions. They also contributed animation to Disney+'s Science Fair–The Series, which won a News and Documentary Emmy. As a band, they have released four albums, and their musical sensibility informs the rhythm and texture of their visual storytelling.
