Shynola are a London-based directing collective identified with Chris Harding, Jason Groves, and Richard “Kenny” Kenworthy (early line-ups included Gideon Baws). They launched with the cult UNKLE animation “Guns Blazing” and built a parallel music-video catalogue—Beck’s “E-Pro,” Coldplay’s “Strawberry Swing,” Blur, Joe Goddard, Caribou, ABBA’s “I Still Have Faith In You”—while expanding into commercials, titles, and short film. Evidenced brand work includes a 2012 Radox stop-motion spot for WCRS via RSA built from fresh flowers, berries, leaves, and nuts with a filmed-then-reassembled “Franken-dance”; a Japanese Hulu film; Beats By Dre “Music Vision”; Audi “What is Music” (Nexus); Postmates “This Is Your Brain On Food” Soup Dumpling and BBQ segments; UFC Noche “Fighters & Heroes”; and a McDonald’s x Crayola pencil-led film through Nexus and Leo Burnett UK. Their 2013 Film4/Warp short Dr. Easy, shot with Barry Ackroyd, used mechanical robot POV tracking markers. Awards summaries cite D&AD, UK Music Video Awards, Edinburgh, a British Independent Film Award, Emmy nominations, and animated Childish Gambino work inside a Cannes Lions-winning campaign. Process favors film grammar inside animation, scratch-on-celluloid, Super8/16mm, and graphic experiment over photoreal CGI.
