Bio & background

Warwick Thornton is an Australian writer, director and cinematographer signed to Photoplay for commercial representation in Australia and New Zealand as of September 2024. His feature Samson & Delilah (2009) won the Caméra d'Or at Cannes. Sweet Country (2017), which he directed and photographed, received the Special Jury Prize at Venice, the Platform Prize at TIFF, the Adelaide Film Festival Audience Award and Best Feature at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. The New Boy (2023), starring Cate Blanchett and Aswan Reid, premiered at Cannes and won the Golden Frog at EnergaCamerimage and an ASC Spotlight Award. Series credits include Firebite (AMC+), Mystery Road and A24's The Beach; he also directed We Don't Need a Map and shot The Sapphires. Advocacy commercials include the Yes23 You're The Voice campaign for the 2023 Indigenous Voice referendum (The Uluru Statement, agency The Monkeys, featuring John Farnham) and Change Direction for The Westerman Jilya Institute for Indigenous Mental Health. Interviewed craft notes include stripping score so location becomes character, vintage Panamorphic lenses described as really soft and gooey, and compositions of close-ups and extreme wides. Photoplay is positioning him for cinematic, thought-provoking commercials focused on dignity, authenticity and truth.
