Bio & background

Zach Heinzerling is an Academy Award-nominated documentary and commercial director working with Epoch Films in the US and UK. He earned the Oscar nomination and Sundance Best Director Award for *Cutie and the Boxer* (2013), a five-year character study of Japanese artists Noriko and Ushio Shinohara praised by The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. His observational, verité-driven approach has since captured intimate moments with Paul McCartney (*McCartney 3,2,1*, Hulu 2021), Beyoncé (directing her "Self-Titled" mini-art feature in 2013), and Rafael Nadal (*Rafa*, Netflix 2026, Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Documentary). Heinzerling's three-year project *Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence* (Hulu 2023) earned acclaim from The New Yorker and Variety for its survivor-centered perspective. In commercials, he has directed AICP Award-winning work for MLB ("Play Catch" 2018), One Show Gold for Smirnoff ("Chris Fonseca"), One Show Silver for Expedia ("Dream Adventures"), and campaigns for New Era and Ciroc. A former HBO documentary editor and University of Texas philosophy graduate, Heinzerling applies minimalist visual design, real-people casting, and what he calls "invisible filmmaking"—creating environments where subjects' truths emerge without heavy directorial artifice.
